Sr Joan Chittister is Joan D. Chittister, a Benedictine Sister of Erie, Pennsylvania, is a best-selling author and a well-known national and international lecturer, and regular columnist for the National Catholic Reporter.

She is also founder and executive director of Benetvision: A Resource and Research Center for Contemporary Spirituality, and past president of the Conference of American Benedictine Prioresses and the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.

During her period as prioress of the community, Joan Chittister created this psalm journal, a means of reflecting on these great prayers. Joan says that the psalms "are the Judeo-Christian mantras. Sung for centuries, they have captured the spiritual reality of one generation after another. They sing of praise and fear and faith and final victory. They sing all the human emotions to God. They talk to God. They scour the world for answers. They ring across time in the human memory.

"As the years pass, these psalms of praise and pain, of success and defeat, shape a contemplative vision that sees the will and face of God in every event, in every human cry from the beginning of time until now.
